The sound of a vicious guard dog is being marketed as a deterrent to home invaders by a man in Hastings.

David Mildon has recorded the barks and snarls of his dog, Prince, and hopes that Prince's fierce demeanour will prove to be a money-maker.

Name: david mildon

"Hawke's Bay has been having a really bad time with home invasion in the last 12 months," Mr Mildon says. "So I thought it was time to invent some weapons, or tools should I say, for our elderly to protect themselves with."

The idea is borrowed from the US, but Mr Mildon says his dog's noises are much scarier.

Three elderly people have been targeted and attacked in their own homes in Napier the past two weeks. Age Concern says the guard dog CD is a useful tool, but warns not to take any risks.

"If you run into this terrible situation, try and escape," Brian McCleary from Age Concern advises. "Try and get out of your house."

Mr Mildon is charging $39.95 for each CD. He says it is cheaper than owning a dog and does not have to be fed, walked or registered.
